Northern Patagonia
Comprising part of the Lake Region and Aysén, from Puerto Montt to Campo de Hielo Sur (the Southern Icefields), this area has the particularity of possessing spots as of yet unexplored by humans.
It is in this area that we find the Carretera Austral of Chile, which crosses in its more than a thousand kilometers the national parks of Alerce Andino, Hornopirén, and Parque Pumalín. From here you can continue along toward Lake Yelcho, an excellent spot for fishing.
The lateral route takes you to Futalefú, an ideal site for kayakers and rafters. The river that lends its name to the town is made up of turbulent white water, a challenge for even the most valiant. Further to the south is the magnificent National Park Queulat with a spectacular hanging glacier visible from the highway. From this area you can take a boat to reach the Termas de Puyuhuapi, hot springs that are a true paradise for resting the body.
Navigation through the channels and fjords leads us to simply spectacular spots, such as the San Raphael lagoon, a place in which the San Raphael glacier, the neck of the San Valentín Campo de Hielo falls into the ocean in an astonishing form.
The road continues along, revealing amazing spots, weighed down with vegetation or magnificent views, such as those which can be found in the General Carrera Lake, the largest lake in Chile, and in which nature has created a marvelous and impressive spectacle: the Catedral de Mármol (The Marble Cathedral). Close to this attraction is found the Baker River, a paradise for fly-fishing
Carretera Austral The Carretera Austral (Southern Highway) is a fascinating route of more than 1,100 km that originates in the city of Puerto Montt and currently ends in Mitchell Fjord, in Puerto Yungay, between the Campos de Hielo Norte and Sur (Northern and Southern Icefields), the largest mass of continental ice after Antarctica. It crosses mountains, rivers, and valleys and borders lakes and glaciers, allowing access to a number of tourist attractions in the Region of Aisén, such as Lake General Carrera, the deepest lake in South America. You can also find surprising hanging glaciers and picturesque villages.
Laguna San Rafael From the cities of Puerto Montt, Puerto Natales and Balmaceda you can take some of the most comfortable and luxurious boats that tour the fjords and channels, passing through the majestic lagoon San Rafael, which surprises with its magnificent eternal ice and its abrupt dip into the ocean.
Pumalín Park and Lake Yelcho Pumalín Park is an area of more than 300,000 hectares that are destined to become a Nature Sanctuary, which among its attractions is a native forest and millennial larches. Without a doubt one of the most fascinating places iin Patagonia are its millennial glaciers. For those who wish to visit them, excursions are organized to Ventisquero Yelcho. A journey, which begins with a trek through the cold forest with southern beech, myrtles, mañíos, cinnamon trees, and all of the typical flora of the area. The journey ends in the Yelcho Observation Area, the boundary for vegetation, where you can observe the imposing glacier wall and its infinite waterfalls.
Lake General Carrera The lake area is one of the most touristy and beautiful. It is the second largest in South America and is shared with Argentina (where it is known as "Buenos Aires"). Thanks to the presence of the Campo de Hielo Norte (the Northern Icefields), this area enjoys a surprisingly warm and sunny microclimate. In this area we find the Catedral de Mármol, or Cathedral of Marble, an extraordinary rock formation with a fantastic labyrinth of caves drawn by the millennial waves of Lake General Carrera.
Hot Springs
In the south of Chile, the Liquiñe-Ofqui fault extends in a parallel form to the Andes for 960 km, from the Llaima Volcano to the Hudson Volcano. The large quantity of thermal water sources that exist in the country is due to this fault: there are more than 70 springs in the Andes and the fjords of this area of lakes and volcanoes in northern Patagonia. It is for this reason that the majority of visitors reach them by boat.
In this area, one hot spring that stands out is Termas de Puyuhuapi, located at the shore of the Puyuhuapi fjord. The Termas have a large thermal pool, private Jacuzzis, and different spa treatments, with an average temperature of 80º C. At the end of the Liquiñe Ofqui fault, we find the Termas de Quitralco, located in the fjord of the same name, and among the most remote thermal baths in Chile. Passengers from the Skorpios cruise boats that go to Laguna San Rafael have the exclusive opportunity to bathe in hot springs that reach temperatures of 50º to 65º C.
