Huaraz

Capital of the Department of Ancash and main town in the Callejon de Huaylas. The city was almost destroyed in the 1970 earthquake, along with the few remaining Colonial Buildings. The climate is mild, with sunny days and cold nights. The rainy season, from December through April. Huaraz is the starting point to the Cordillera Blanca.

Important Sights Around Huaraz

Chavin de Huantar Located 120 Km South of Huaraz at the Callejón de los Conchucos. This archaeological site was a fortress temple, built around 600 BC.

The complex is made of stone buildings around a big plaza. The main structures are The Old Temple (A horseshoe shaped building with a 5 meter high obelisk) and The New Temple (a truncated pyramid). The best attractions are the stone heads and the underground galleries and passageways, which form an extensive labyrinth in the interior of the structures.

Willkawain
Archaeological site dating from AD 700 to 1000 the second phase of the Huari empire. Consists of three large and several small structures with stone roofs.


Natural Attractions Around Huaraz

Glacier Pastoruri
4,900 mt. Located 70 Km South of Huaraz. Mount Pastoruri attracts many visitors looking for snow and skiing.

Monterrey Hot Springs
Located on the way to Carhuaz, with tourist facilities. Its waters come from the ground at around 50 degrees Celsius.

Llanganuco Lake
Turquoise colored waters in a narrow glacial valley flanked by the peaks of Huandoy and Huascarán.

Rataquena Lookout
A breathtaking view of Huaraz and the surroundings is available at this spot.

Huayhuash
The Cordillera Huayhuash offers an amazing natural scenery, South of Cordillera Blanca. It is ideal for climbing or trekking and it has the most beautiful lakes and valleys with waterfalls. Huayhuash has a unique wildlife, puma, deer etc.
