Sights around the center
Alameda
de los Descalzos
Located in the District of El Rimac, this promenade
was built in 1611 and rebuilt in 1770 with Italian
marble statues and British vases. On each side
of the Alameda are Colonial churches and the
convent of Los Descalzos.
Cerro San Cristobal
Natural lookout point, with an impressive view
of the city. One of the first "Pueblos Jovenes"
(highlanders which migrated to Lima), settled
here. Tours are organized from the Plaza Mayor.
Barrio Chino
It became the home for Chinese immigrants. Picturesque
Chinese architecture and temples can be seen
there. Excellent Chinese food is sold in "chifas"
(Chinese Restaurants).
Plaza Italia
A gift from the Italian community to Lima. it
has a beautiful bronze fountain dating from
1611. The church of Las Descalzas de San José
(1604) with beautiful baroque scenes and Santa
Ana (1550) are found here.
Parque Universitario
Plaza that served as entrance to the first University
in Peru, San Marcos, founded in 1551 by the
Dominican order. It has beautiful monuments
and a clock tower in the middle of the plaza,
which plays the National Anthem at midday.
Plaza Bolivar
Also known as Plaza of Congress. The building
that housed the Court of the Holy Inquisition
borders it and also the Congress of the Republic.
Parque Cultural de Lima
Inaugurated in January 2000, with an outdoor
amphitheater, Japanese Garden, food court and
children activities has become a new peaceful
area within the Center of Lima.
