Important Sights
Plaza Mayor
Plaza where Francisco Pizarro founded the city.
Located one block south of the Rimac River.
The UNESCO has declared it a World Heritage
Site. Around the Plaza Mayor stand the Government
Palace, the Cathedral, Archbishops Palace, City
Hall and the "Club Union". In the center of
the Plaza, there is an original bronze fountain
dating from 1650.
Government Palace
(Palacio de Gobierno). Stands on the site originally
built by Francisco Pizarro. It became the official
residency of the Representative of the Spanish
crown. It has been modified and rebuilt since
the original layout.
The Cathedral
Stands on the site of two previous buildings,
the first one finished in 1555 and then modified,
being completed in 1622. After the 1746 earthquake,
the new building was reduced to rubble, and
the existing church was completed in 1755.
Archbishop's Palace
Rebuilt in 1924, including a beautiful wooden
traditional balcony.
Plaza San Martin
Inaugurated on July 28, 1921, in the celebration
of the first centennial of Peru's independence
with an impressive statue of San Martin in the
center.
