DAY 1
Reception in Puno
Upon arrival to the city of Juliaca, transfer
to your hotel in Puno. Overnight in Puno.
DAY 2
Lake Titicaca
Breakfast.
Our trip starts in the Lake Titicaca an impressive
lake of oceanic proportions (8,380 Km2). Titicaca
National Reserve was created in 1978. There
are 37,000 hectares of marsh reeds in the
South and North sectors of Lake Titicaca that
are preserved. In the Reserve, we can find
resident and migratory birds. Lake Titicaca
is a wetland, considered the highest navigable
lake in the world, and it is the largest body
of fresh water in South America. Titicaca
Lake has an altitude of 3822 meters above
sea level. The lake´s water is slightly
salty. During this first day, we will be sailing
in a motor boat, through the Puno bay and
also around the reeds. We will also have an
opportunity to visit the Uros Islands.
Most
of the species that inhabit this lake can
be found on almost all bodies of water like
lakes, pools and streams in the high Andes.
Waterfowl species like the Puna Teal (
Anas
puna), Yellow-billed Pintail (
Anas
georgica), Andean Ruddy-Duck (
Oxyura
ferruginea) and Andean Coot (
Fulica
ardesiaca) can be easily spotted. The
endemic Titicaca Flightless Grebe (also Known
as Short-winged Grebe (
Rollandia microptera)
inhabits the Titicaca lake basin, it is easily
seen along the lakeshore all year round. Overnight
in Puno. Breakfast and box lunch included.
DAY 3
Lake Umayo, Lake Lagunillas
Early breakfast, Today we
will visit Lake Umayo, part of Lake Titicaca
basin, 30 minute drive from Puno, on the
road to Juliaca. Here we can bird the lake
shores and the surrounding area, where we
can find the grebe and waterfowl. Later,
continue about 2 hour drive to Lake Lagunillas,
which has a good set of water birds as well
as puna birding. Late in the afternoon,
return to Puno for overnight. Breakfast
and box lunch included.
