Reception in Arequipa
After your arrival, reception
at the airport and transfer to your hotel

Arequipa
is a land of volcanoes and it is flanked by
three snow-capped volcanoes: Misti (5821 m,
19098 ft), Chachani (6075m, 19931 ft) and
Pichu Pichu (5425m, 17799 ft). It is known
as the White City because most of the colonial
buildings are made with a volcanic material
called Sillar (extracted from the nearby quarries).
Arequipa is the largest Andean city in Peru,
located in the south west of the country in
the Chili River Valley, which lies at an elevation
of 2300m on the western slope of the Andes.
A great part of the territory is arid, with
deep valleys such as the Colca Canyon and
Cotahuasi.
In
the afternoon, visit the countryside of Arequipa
(campiña), for our first birding activity
in Arequipa. Among others, we can find the
following species in the area:

- Golden-Spotted Ground-Dove (Metriopelia aymara)
- Giant Hummingbird (Patagona gigas)
- Peruvian Sheartail (Thaumastura cora)

Late in the afternoon, return to your hotel.

DAY 2
Full Day Chiguata
Breakfast.
Early departure to the town of Chiguata, located
at 1.5 hrs drive from Arequipa, where very
interesting birding sites can be found, also
we will see flocks of Vicuñas, Llamas
and Alpacas. Late in the afternoon, return
to Arequipa for overnight. Box Lunch included.

DAY 3
Lagunas Salinas
Breakfast. Early departure
to Laguna Salinas, a 10 Km. long salt lake,
(Peru´s Ramsar Wetland) with abundant
wildlife. Salinas is located at the back
of Pichu Pichu volcano, 70 km from Arequipa
(1.5 hour drive) at an elevation of 4300m.
When the water levels are high in the wet
season, birding is done from the road; however,
during the dry season the lake is a salt
flat (you can walk towards the lake). Salinas
is a home of large flocks of Flamingos,
including the Andean Flamingo (
Phoenicopterus
andinus), Chilean Flamingo (
Phoenicopterus
chilensis) and Puna Flamingo (
Phoenicopterus
jamesi). From September to April you
can see migrant shorebirds. Late in the
afternoon, return to Arequipa for overnight.

DAY 4 - DAY 5
Colca Canyon (2D/1N)
Breakfast. Early pick up
from your hotel for the scenic ride to the
Colca Canyon. On leaving Arequipa you will
drive through the Aguada Blanca National
Reserve where you will see herds of llamas
and alpacas grazing on the Catahuasi plains.
After 4 hours you will reach the beginning
of the Colca Canyon with its green valleys
and andean terraces. The Colca Canyon is
one of the deepest in the world (around
1050 m), it is a geological formation carved
out by the river over millions of years,
as it has descended between the mountains.
The Places to visit at the Colca Valley
are Pampa Cañahuas, Callalli, Sumbay,
Chivay, Pincollo, Maca, Achoma y Yanque.
At
41 km from the town of Chivay, there is
an observatory of the condors called Cruz
del Condor. From this viewpoint, early in
the morning (before sunrise) you can watch
the Andean Condor rise from their roost,
taking advantage of the thermals of the
place, soar upwards from the depths and
glide without flapping their wings, after
that the condors take to the skies. Overnight
at a comfortable hotel in the Colca Valley.
Late
in the afternoon of the second day, return
to Arequipa. Overnight in Arequipa.
