Festivals in Peru are the product of the fusion of European and native cultures and religions with their roots in the great pre- Columbian ceremonies that survived Spanish colonization. Music, dances, splendorous costumes and traditions from all over the country can be enjoyed by visitors who wish to get involved with authentic Peruvian customs.
The major festivals which could be of interest to the visitors are:
La Virgen de la Calendaria (Puno)
The festival of La Calendaria is rich in color , movement and sound. It takes place between February 2nd and February 11th in the city of Puno at the shores of Lake Titicaca, border with Bolivia. Dances from remote corners of Puno are shown here.
Corpus Christi (Cusco)
An exceptional colorful and magnificent exhibition which takes place the first Sunday of June in the city of Cusco. It represents the blending of two cultures, Spanish and Indigenous. The procession includes statues of Virgin Mary and various patron saints of the surrounding towns all of them richly attired and paraded on huge silver platforms, escorted by colorful bands of musicians.
Inti Raymi
It takes place on June 24th in the city of Cusco, officially opening the sowing season. It reconstructs the feast of the Inti Raymi as it was originally celebrated. This great Inca winter solstice festival, has become a major tourist attraction, bringing thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.
Festidanza
Festidanza, a very popular annual event in the beautiful White City of Arequipa, takes place the second week of August. Visitors enjoy the wonderful regional folklore, fireworks, handicrafts etc.
